How Long Can a Foldable Smartphone Last with 200 Folds and Unfolds a Day?
Shi Shiming stated that the Survival Law of the Display Industry proposed by BOE reveals the relationship between the performance and price of display products: if prices remain unchanged, the performance of display products needs to double or more every 36 months, and this cycle is being shortened amid rapid technological iteration. This law means ordinary consumers can purchase display products with better technology and user experience at more affordable prices.
In Shi's view, this industry law drives the popularization of cutting-edge technologies at a faster pace, benefiting more consumers on the one hand; on the other hand, it spurs R&D personnel to continuously achieve technological breakthroughs and redefine the standards for high-end flagship products.
Taking LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) technology as an example, he noted that LTPO has evolved from a pioneering feature just two or three years ago to a must-have for high-end flagship devices. Consumers have different refresh rate demands when playing games, watching videos or reading e-books on their phones, and LTPO technology can automatically adjust the refresh rate (1 to 165Hz) while delivering a 15% power consumption reduction for the entire device. It not only ensures high fluency for mobile phones and greatly extends battery life, but also comes with eye-friendly health features.
According to public information, BOE is the first enterprise in China to take the lead in laying out LTPO technology and realize its first mass production. Data from Sigmaintell shows that BOE ranked first in China in the shipment volume of high-end LTPO screens in 2024. Omdia, a London-based technology market research and consulting firm, released data in September 2025 indicating that the shipment share of LTPO technology in the smartphone display market has risen from approximately 20% in 2021 to 50% in 2025.
According to BOE's financial report, the company's R&D investment in the first half of 2025 reached 6.081 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 4.10%; its R&D investment in 2024 and 2023 stood at 13.205 billion yuan and 11.363 billion yuan respectively.
Shi Shiming pointed out that no matter how impressive the technical parameters are, they are mere empty talk if they do not align with consumers' usage habits. In the future, joint product development between display panel manufacturers and terminal brands will become a mainstream trend in the display industry.
For instance, the X300 smartphone screen co-developed by BOE and vivo not only integrates LTPO adaptive refresh rate technology, but also caters specifically to users' growing demand for eye protection by featuring two switchable dimming modes: high-frequency PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) dimming and full-brightness DC (Direct Current) dimming. PWM dimming is a technology that uses digital output from microprocessors to control analog circuits, while DC dimming adjusts screen brightness by directly regulating current or voltage—this mode significantly reduces flicker and is more eye-friendly compared with PWM dimming. The East Screen co-created with OnePlus natively supports a 165Hz ultra-high refresh rate (Hertz, a unit of frequency), which increases the number of image updates per second on the phone screen and is tailor-made for gamers.
Shi Shiming said that in recent years, BOE has been committed to redefining a "high-quality display" from the perspective of subjective experience to objective standards. A series of initiatives, including launching China's first technical brand in the display field, achieving continuous innovation in technologies such as LTPO, Tandem and TADF wide-color-gamut devices, and formulating transparency standards, all aim to define the criteria for high-quality displays.
"We don't have to be all-round, but we can empower consumers in specific fields with our core expertise. We want to make the screen no longer an undifferentiated standardized component, but a part that defines a product's identity," Shi said.
